Dental crowns are a type of dental veneer which cover the teeth 360 degrees. They are also known as full veneers. Dental crowns are mostly offered for cosmetical concerns like restoring damages, chipped, misaligned tooth/teeth. They can also strengthen damaged teeth and restore their full functionality as well as appearance. For example, if the tooth has an ongoing decay, a dental crown can stall the damage and protect the rest of the tooth. Dental crowns are also recommended for teeth with large fillings.
Application of dental crowns are an irreversible procedure. Teeth need to be shaved down 1 to 1.5mm for the application of dental crowns. If you are planning to get dental crowns for a smile makeover, please take your time to decide. It is a life-time commitment.
Dental crowns last for 15-20 years and your oral hygiene directly affects how long would they last.
Types of dental crowns we offer for our patients at Dental Platinum Turkey;
· PFM (Porcelain fused to metal) dental crowns:
PFM crowns are mixture of metal and porcelain. They have a metal core inside with a porcelain exterior to match the colour of your natural teeth, however we do not recommend them for front teeth since they might cause depigmentation on your gum tissue and black lines between your teeth and gum over time.
· Zirconium dental crowns:
Zirconia has a famous reputation as a material that can stimulate the toughness of diamonds. This type of dental crowns have a white zirconia core inside with a porcelain exterior. Unlike the other metal dental crowns, zirconium crowns never show the dark metal line and the porcelain makes the crown look like natural teeth.
· E.Max dental crowns:
E.Max dental crowns are made from a top-grade material known as lithium disilicate ceramic and they contain zero metal alloys. The main advantage of E.Max dental crowns is the natural looking end results because of the translucency of the material.
There is a common misbelief that you do not need to brush your teeth after the application of dental crowns however this is completely false. You need to maintain a good oral hygiene after the application of dental crowns. You need to floss and brush your teeth twice a day and visit your local dentist for your regular check-ups and for scale&polishing in every six months.
When it comes to aftercare, the first thing you should keep on mind is maintaining a good oral hygiene as stated above, however you need to be more careful while flossing. Avoid pulling the floss upwards from the space between your teeth. Instead, you should gently slide it out of the gum line. This way, there is less chance of the crowns slipping out. You should also be selective on the foods that you eat. You should stay away from chewy or sticky food. They can stick on your crowns and may put them out. In that case, you need to visit a dentist to reimplant them. The second type of food you should avoid is very tough food. For example, you should never try to crack nuts with your dental crowns just like your natural teeth.
