This question is among the most curious questions among patients, however, this treatment is an extremely easy application that does not cause any pain thanks to medical and technological developments. In this blog post, we will tell you about root canal treatment and why you should not be afraid of it. We will also talk about whether it is needed for aesthetic treatments such as dental crowns.

The myth that root canal treatment is a painful procedure

Contrary to what is known, this legend is a thought that denies itself. However, like many others, you have always thought that root canal treatment is an intervention that should be avoided. At this point, we need to mention that you should never have a root canal treatment unless you have to. This treatment is a method used to repair and save a tooth that is severely decayed or infected. And the myth is based on the old technology used in the past years.

The fact that root canal treatment is a painless procedure

First of all, this treatment requires patience and dedication both for the endodontist and the patient. Today, modern root canal treatments are performed by applying local anesthesia to the tooth and its surroundings before treatment, when deemed necessary by dentists. After local anesthesia, the teeth and surrounding tissues are numbed. Then, tooth decay is cleaned and root canals are opened. After your dentist has removed all the infected pulp inside the tooth and cleaned the area, it fills the root canals and seals the tooth to prevent any germs or bacteria from entering the tooth.

Today, there is a confusion of information regarding the necessity of root canal treatment in the case of application of dental veneers/crowns. Root canal treatment is not a standard procedure for these treatments however in some cases when teeth need to be shaved more than usual for the application of dental crowns, there is a possibility for nerves to expose. In that case, dentists may recommend root canal treatment for these teeth to avoid future pain and sensitivity.
